Other material

This file provides material which is related to the albums, but does not deal with the albums itself.

Collecting
The albums were issued as advertising for the company. One could collect vouchers (Gutscheine) and a number of these vouchers could be exchanged for stamps. The books could be bought separately, or also be bought by the vouchers. The vouchers were packed in all packages of Coffee Hag and sometimes published in advertisemets.

Below some examples of the vouchers :

Voucher from the early 1930s

Voucher from the early 1930s

Voucher from 1933 (?)

Voucher from 1933

Voucher from 1934

Voucher from 1938

When ordering with the appropriate number of vouchers, one could fill out a form which stamps were required:

The form should be send in an appropriate envelope:

Promotional leaflets

During the year different promotional leaflets were published. Some in colour, some not. Most are not dated.

Below are six different promotional leaflets shown, but more have existed.:

  • No title. Black and white. Approx. 1932. File : Wappenwerk5.pdf
  • Das Deutsche Ortswappen Werk. Colour. Date unknown. File : Wappenwerk4.pdf
  • Das Kaffee Hag Wappenwerk. Mainly black and white. After 1938, with the announcement of a new album for Austria. File : Wappenwerk7.pdf
  • Das Kaffee Hag Wappenwerk. Mainly black and red. Approx. 1939, with the announcement of a new album for Austria and Sudentenland.. File : Wappenwerk3.pdf

A different style of promotions were the so-called Klappkarten, or small folders. A series of these was send to schools, most likely very early in the process of the second edition. Very surprsingly is that the stamps used as examples of these folders were never used in the albums ! This makes these Klappkarten very unique. How many and when they were published is still unknown. I am aware of 6 such folders. An example is shown here.

Leaflets with overview of published series

In 1938/9 a small leaflet was published with the overview of the published series by State. The initial leaflet was published in both normal font as in old Germanic font. After the “Anschluss” with Austria the leaflet was published again, with an additional text stating that a new album for the Ostmark (new name for Austria) was in preparation. This album, however, was never published.

Advertising

During the years the company advertised heavily in many newspapers and journals. In many of these advertisements a coupon for the stamps was added, often with a picture and a small text about the albums. Some examples are shown below.

Letters

The company at first used the normal company stationary for correspondence about the stamps or albums. Later special stationaly was printed with three arms in the letterhead; Bremen, Badenweiler and Hamburg.

An example of old stationary can be seen on this letter from unknown date; an example of the new stationary on this letter from 1934.

A similar system was used in Holland, Switzerland and Belgium; firt th enormal stationaly, later special stationary with arms from those countries.

Other material

The company also used the arms on their regular advertising campaigns.

In 1935 the series was advertised on the back of the Münchener Kalender, a heraldic calendar issued from 1885-1936 also with images made by Hupp:

The company also used the arms on a series of menu cards. In total 14 cards were issued, each with 4 arms. An example is shown below, all cards can be seen here.

Similar menucards were also issued in Switzerland and France with the arms from the series from those countries.

A special menucard was issued for the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936. It shows the coats of arms of the cities that hosted the Olympic Games from 1896-1932. The menu states that the images of the arms were taken from the albums, but that can only be true for a few of them, and the design is clearly different. The arms of Berlin are similar to the image in the albums though.

Another item issued with the arms was a daily hour planner (Stundenplan) to be used in the kitchen or on ones desk.

The arms were also used on a coffee tin for Hag coffee. The tin shows some decorations and 8 different arms. See images below.

  • Similar cans are known with the arms from Belgium (2 types) and the Netherlands.
